About "A Ranch"
This 17-acre ranch has been a special gathering place for a very long time, as can be seen by the pictographs
near the classroom, which were drawn by the Cahuilla Indians about 800 years ago, and the nearby bedrock
mortars (grinding stones).
About 75% of A Ranch electricity is generated by our solar panels, and pure water comes from our well.
A Ranch is
in scenic Southern California,
7 miles south of Hemet and 80 miles northeast of San Diego. It is in the foothills of the San Jacinto mountains,
45 minutes from beautiful mile-high Idyllwild.
The nearest airports are Palm Springs, San Diego and Ontario. The Ontario, Los Angeles and John Wayne/Orange
County airports are accessible by shuttle.
There are three houses for students to stay in, trailer hookups and camping areas.

The focus of Iona's Module IV classes is the integration of traditional Eastern/Taoist philosophy and acupressure theory with Western psychotherapeutic theories and techniques that fit naturally with and enhance the positive effects of Jin Shin Do® Bodymind Acupressure®. (These include Rogerian Active Listening, Ericksonian principles of communication with the unconscious mind, Redecision Therapy, and trauma work including as pioneered by Peter Levine.)
You will spend most of the time in direct experiences, deriving extensive familiarity with leading edge techniques, both as a practitioner and as a recipient. Verbal techniques will be practiced just verbally first, and then utilized while holding points in simple Jin Shin Do® Acupressure Release Examples.
Part 1 Bodymind Trancework
25 hours: to be scheduled.
Prerequisite: Advanced Jin Shin Do® (Module I, part 3)
Class fee: $675
Jin Shin Do® clients spontaneously go into meditative or trance states, in which there is increased receptivity to minimal cues, so well-phrased suggestions can facilitate deeper release and enhance self-esteem. The Ericksonian approach is a process of communication with the unconscious mind. It emphasizes the positive and is empowering.
This class includes:
- Active listening.
- Body Focusing Technique.
- Simply Comfortable Suggestions.
- Wei-Wu-Wei: the easy way.
- Indications of trance states.
- 7 principles of communication with the unconscious mind.
- Emphasizing the positive.
- Suggestive language & Indirection.
- Supporting the client’s process with points and suggestions.
- C.A.R.E. F.O.R.S. – a simple body-oriented trancework outline, with extended versions of the Body Focusing Technique & the Place of Comfort Meditation as examples.
- What to do when feelings and emotions come up.
- Meridians as metaphor & therapeutic story-telling.
- Exercises to develop therapeutic skills.
- Ethics. Projections, transference & counter-transference.
Part 2 Bodymind Trancework & Trauma
25 hours: to be scheduled.
Prerequisite: Module IV, Part 1.
Class fee: $675
The classics say: “During shock there is no home for the Shen,” and “Shock disturbs the Spirit.” If the Shen is disturbed too much, dis-ease can result.
The DSM-IV, published by the American Psychiatric Association, says that Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is characterized by hyperarousal, or the inability to moderate arousal, resulting in sleep disorders, muscular tension and pain, difficulty concentrating and other symptoms following “experiencing or witnessing an event or events that involved actual or threatened death or serious injury, or a threat to the physical integrity of self or others.”
The focus of this class is on healing from trauma disorders and welcoming feelings without retraumatization.
This class includes:
- Recognizing symptoms of PTSD.
- The fight, flight or freeze responses to trauma.
- How trauma affects the brain.
- Learning to use Bodymind Acupressure® techniques and acu-point combinations to help reduce anxiety, recover feelings without retraumatization and replace victim consciousness with victor consciousness.
- Encouraging the trembling release that is the body’s natural way of releasing fear.
- Verbal skills & point combinations to help reduce anxiety & hyperarousal and find the joy of feeling & of being.
- Learning to use safe, effective body-oriented “exposure” and “cognitive” therapy techniques to recover feelings without retraumatization.
- How to guide the client back to felt experiences of competence, to encourage victor consciousness.
- How Dr. Milton Erickson involved the body when doing trancework.
- Exercises to develop therapeutic skills.
Part 3 “The Emotional Kaleidoscope” & Healing the Wounds of Abuse
25 hours: to be scheduled.
Prerequisite: Module IV, Part 2.
Class fee: $675
Abuse survivors often have special issues besides the general considerations for trauma survivors. A characteristic reaction to abuse is to “trance out” or dissociate. Later, a positive trance state (like that experienced during bodywork) can evoke memories of earlier defensive trance states. To heal the wounds of abuse, it is essential to access synergic (harmonious, joy-full) feelings and spend as much time with the Free Child as with the Wounded Child.
By recognizing the emotional polarities of the five emotional spectra in the "Emotional Kaleidoscope," you can assist the natural movement from distressed feelings back to the underlying extreme emotions and then the core synergic states, using simple suggestions and points of related meridians.
A lasting wound of physical, sexual or emotional abuse can be a decision that one had to make to survive, which might now be limiting becoming all of that Self that one truly is. Redecision Therapy gives the opportunity to decide what one would like to change (of what can be changed, which is oneself) and then to make new decisions while in a child state. This is important because of “state-dependent” memory – the phenomenon of remembering what was learned in a previous emotional state (e.g. anxiety, fear) when we are in that emotional state again.
This class includes:
- How using the 5-Elements based Emotional Kaleidoscope guides release of distressed feelings & encourages the natural movement from the underlying extreme emotions to synergic (harmonious) emotional states.
- Demonstrations and practice of techniques from Ericksonian and Redecision Therapy for comforting the “wounded child” and for getting in touch with and nurturing the “free child” (core Self).
- Using metaphors from acupressure theory and story telling to assist the process of healing.
- Handout & lecture on the Emotional Kaleidoscope and modes of cognition or personality disorders (i.e. how to understand people you cannot understand), which begins with the following.
- Essential Senses for a Joy-full Life:
Common sense (including a sense of proportion), a sense of humor (the ability to laugh), & a sense of wonder (the ability to feel AWE!).
Required books: A Complete Guide to Acupressure, Revised 2002, chapters 7, 21-22; The Joy of Feeling 1987/2003, chapters 1-4, both by Iona Marsaa Teeguarden
See: Product catalog

Brief Biography:
Iona Marsaa Teeguarden, M.A., L.M.F.T.
A licensed psychotherapist for thirty years, Iona is the originator of Jin Shin Do
®Bodymind Acupressure
® and the founder (in 1982) and director of the Jin Shin Do
® Foundation for Bodymind Acupressure
® - a network of Authorized Jin Shin Do
®Teachers and Registered Jin Shin Do
® Acupressurists throughout the U.S., Canada, Europe and elsewhere.
It was in late 1971 that Iona first taught an introductory class in what would, in a few years, be called "acupressure."
(It was organized by John Lilly at a retreat center with an isolation tank in Big Bear.) Iona was introduced
to Shiatsu by Michio Kushi in 1970, and she took Jin Shin Jyutsu classes with Mary Iino Burmeister in 1971-1972
(and again in 1975). Iona studied with French, Chinese and Korean acupuncturists in 1972-1980, and then in Japan
for three months in 1976. In Tokyo, she took private Jin Shin Jyutsu classes with Haruki Kato, and had the honor
of giving a Jin Shin Do Acupressure session to Katsusuke Serizawa, Sc.D., whose landmark book Tsubo: Vital Points
for Oriental Therapy had just been published by Japan Publications (who, for the next couple dozen years, published
Iona's three books on acupressure).
In addition to teaching at her "Acupressure Workshop" in the seventies (first in West L.A. and then in Santa
Monica), Iona began in 1979 to teach Jin Shin Do
® Acupressure in New York, then at Ohashi's Shiatsu Education Center. She first taught in Europe in 1981
and in Canada in 1985. She has taught Jin Shin Do
® Acupressure classes in 21 U.S. states, 2 Canadian provinces, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.
In addition to numerous Jin Shin Do
® Bodymind Acupressure
® class handbooks and charts, Iona is the author of:
-
The Acupressure Way of Health: Jin Shin Do
® (1978, the first acupressure book to emphasize the "Strange Flows" or Extraordinary Vessels);
-
The Joy of Feeling: Bodymind Acupressure
® (1987, a landmark book integrating classic Chinese acupuncture theory with Eastern/Taoist and Western
psychological views); and
-
A Complete Guide to Acupressure (first published in 1996 / Revised in 2002, with 8 chapters by Iona - on
the four main theories underlying Jin Shin Do
® Acupressure, Ericksonian principles of change, and abuse and trauma issues - & 14 chapters by Senior
Authorized Jin Shin Do
® Teachers).
Beginning in the first year of her practice, Iona’s clients sometimes had emotions and early memories come up during sessions.
She found valuable insights into what classic acupuncture theory called the extreme emotions and into what Iona
would later call synergic emotions in a voluminous correspondence course that she took from Chinese acupuncturist
Dr. Kok Yuen Leung. Also in the early 70s, she experienced co- counseling, read Dr. Wilhelm Reich’s writings
including on the segments of armoring, and was a research assistant to Dr. Paul Popenoe on a project to help
prevent student suicide through the establishment of peer counseling centers at colleges and universities throughout
the U.S.
Wanting to write a book about the bodymind connection that integrated classic Chinese acu-theory and modern Western psychological
theories and practices, Iona returned to school in 1979, received an M.A. in psychology in 1983 from Antioch
University, and become a Marriage and Family Therapist in 1983.
In 1985, she attended the landmark Evolution of Psychotherapy conference in Phoenix, Arizona – the world’s largest psychotherapy
conference, sponsored by the Milton H. Erickson Foundation. In ensuing years, she attended several other Evolution
of Psychotherapy and Ericksonian conferences. At these inspiring events, Iona was privileged to learn from many
of the psychotherapists whose books she had read, as well as many others. They included: Mary Goulding, M.S.W.
& Bob Goulding, M.D.; Jay Haley; R.D. Laing, M.D.; Stephen Lankton, M.S.W.; Peter Levine, Ph.D.; Alexander Lowen,
M.D.; Rollo May, Ph.D.; Salvador Minuchin, M.D.; Carl Rogers, Ph.D.; Ernest Rossi, Ph.D.; Virginia Satir, M.A.;
Thomas Szasz, M.D.; Bessel Van der Kolk, M.D.; Carl Whitaker, M.D.; Michael Yapko, Ph.D. and Jeffrey K. Zeig,
Ph.D., founder of the Milton H. Erickson Foundation, with whom Iona also took classes in Ericksonian hypnotherapy.
